Part 3 From Howard Appel-Carnell “Cadillac” Williams – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The final Rookie Assement from Howard Appel

Similar to the Bears’ situation, it has become quite clear that the Bucs are not satisfied with incumbent RB Michael Pittman as their #1 running back going into 2005. Although he showed some flashes of brilliance last year, Pittman has not shown enough to convince anyone that he can handle 20-25 carries a game and take pressure off the passing game, when needed. So, enter Cadillac Williams, Auburn star RB, who should be able to step into this situation and snag the starting job away from Pittman with little trouble. Just like fellow Auburn rookie, Ronnie Brown, Williams should be able to make an immediate impact in his first season, and is an excellent addition to most fantasy football teams. Coach Jon Gruden may not have to display his classic “Chucky” face that often in 2005 with Williams running the ball for him, taking a lot of pressure off an average passing game. With this move, look for Pittman’s value to go way down, as he now does not rate as a starting running back any longer. Just like in Chicago, they will likely make this an open competition in training camp, but it’s unlikely that this Cadillac will be in the Bucs garage in Week 1. Look for him to score at least 7-9 times in 2005 and rush for at least 800-900 yards. In most keeper leagues, this guy won’t stay on the board that long once some of the big names are gone.

So, there you have it. A look at some of the top rookies in 2005 that should make an immediate impact. With the importance of the running back position in fantasy football, you are better off loading up on potentially good players at this position, and taking your chances with the receiver position, once you grab a top-notch player there. The receiver position is so much deeper than the running back position, that you have plenty more choices at receiver once the top ones are gone.
